Backround History of the Area In this area of Grey County it was probably ban of Algonquin Indians who were the rirst rarr'i,rs in this county. Because of the white ran's cunning and interfering the Iroquois came into Grey County and massacred the two Indian tribes and the scattered survivors were absorbed into the other tribes. Lntcr 0iiiibway Indians, by their warfare and persistence, cleared the Iroquois out of this county and came to settle here themselves. -

In the winter of 1847-4a one was cut down about two miles south of Annan, waich measured seven feet in diameter on the stump, and fully eight feet at the ground. Another 1are elm, about the same size in diameter wa cut a few years later on a farm about three miles northwest of Leith. Thomas Vickers, in his cheese factory on Lot 35, Concession B, no doubt contributed to the 16, 387 pounds of cheese prothtced in iydenham in 1861. -

The land that the present Annan store stands on was taken Xroi the Crown by tr. In 1530, tne store changed hands again with wr. receit years, the outside of the store has been re-covered, the inside remode±ied to a 5ilf-service type of store, and along with numerous modern refrigeration units and an cii furnace has the appearance of a modern store.Photos: Annan Store

Bowie operated the store tter Mr. Thomas Edmonstone, for a short period, and then it was sold to iir. 1) The Blacksmith shop at .&nnan The blacksmith shop was located beside the home) owned by ou 3orners. Jharlie Lemon, who was blacksmith for many years learned his trade at i.ichirinley's rilacks'nith shop in Sognor and started up business for himself in Annan. I thers who carried on a blacksmith business in this location were J.F. lelford, wh:: built the stone house and buildings for the blacksmith trade about 1858.
