All in a sleigh’s work!: Winter Celebrations and Traditions

Looking to add a dash of historic spice to your exploration of celebrations and traditions? Please enjoy our special tradition lesson plans and Dressed for Christmas videos at home or school. Our Dressed for Christmas videos visit our 1853 log cabin, 1886 log house and 1925 farmhouse as they prepare for the holiday season. Traditions fuel our experiences, and we hope you and your family enjoy celebrating traditions together, whatever they are.

The videos are about Christmas traditions as per historic census data. Most Grey County residents in those time periods were of a Christian-based faith. The makeup of Grey is very different now, but we can look at our past and see how traditions evolved through immigration and for personal reasons. Many of the questions asked during the videos are not Christmas-specific and allow people of different faiths and experiences to make connections.

This programming is linked to the grade 2 curriculum but also touches on the grade 1 and 3 curriculums. These activities are great for all learners, just adjust to suit and have fun!

Food has been a part of celebrations for centuries. In fact, it is hard to think of many traditions that don't include food! Making connections with the present makes it easier to connect to the past. 

What you need:

 

The goal of this activity is to compare how traditions were celebrated between different generations, friends and families. 

By asking students to look at similarities and differences outside of their personal experience, they will gain a better understanding of changes in traditions over time and between people and cultures.

This activity demonstrates how new traditions begin. When we meet people, we are introduced to their traditions and celebrations and we integrate the things that interest us into our lives. In this activity, students will create a brand-new tradition/celebration using ideas from their classmates.

What you need:

Primary source documents in the Grey County Archives allow us to peek into the past. Historic personal journals help readers connect to the past in a meaningful way. 

Students will draw comparisons between their winter holidays and how the citizens of Grey County spent the winter months in the past.

When we look back on our lives, we can all pinpoint times when change was hard. As children, our feelings were even bigger, especially around changes to traditions. 

The goal of this activity is to look at how traditions and celebrations can evolve. You can use the examples provided or create one of your own.

In 1853, we look at an Irish immigrant family and the ways they adapted their traditions to their new home.

In 1886, a second-generation Scottish-Canadian family shares their traditions with shortbread and cards.

In 1925, a family with original ties to Germany shares their Christmas tree, gift shopping options and stollen (fruitcake).
