Saints & Sinners: A Spirited History of Grey County

The wild days of Grey County history are revisited with the newest in-house exhibit, Saints & Sinners: A Spirited History of Grey County. Alcohol played an important role in shaping the early history of our county.

This exhibit tells this story from the early days of our first settlers, to the wild days of Prohibition; from our highly successful breweries and distilleries to our secretive bootlegging operations and many things in-between.

As the Garafraxa and Toronto-Sydenham access roads funnelled settlers into Grey County, new communities were established. Each community had at least one hotel or tavern providing respite for those travellers journeying into the Queen’s Bush to set up new homesteads. Highly successful breweries also became part of the business landscape as the County grew and prospered.

All of this came to a grinding halt when Temperance and Prohibition laws took over; alcohol production and consumption moved underground. Join us to learn about this fascinating, and often secretive, part of Grey County history!
