Fundraising

Many visitors from communities in Grey, as well as tourists worldwide, have enjoyed and experienced living history at Grey Roots. Our long-term village plan involves the addition of several more buildings and a train.

The Schoolhouse was an initiative of Grey Unit of the Retired Teachers of Ontario and the Grey Retired Women’s Teacher’s Organization. The teachers contributed fundraising, physical labour, and support in order to make this dream a reality. In addition to the contributions made by the teacher groups, we wish to thank the students of the Technology Department at Saugeen District Secondary School for volunteering their time to build the school structure. Our sincere appreciation also goes to the Shouldice Design Center for contributing the brick for the schoolhouse.

The Rice family graciously sponsored the construction of a more modern-age Blacksmith Shop. The George Rice Blacksmith Shop is now a reality through the efforts and skills of local timber framers and volunteers who have generously given their time, muscle, and perseverance. This new Shop will enable our interpreters to present the evolution of the blacksmith trade from the early pioneer times to the birth of the automobile and the automotive garage.

The Good Cheer Bandstand was designed by architect G.M. Diemert to be representative of a bandstand one might find in Grey County in the 1920s. It is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. Project Manager was John Hopper. The construction of this bandstand was made possible due the wonderful efforts of our community partner the Scenic City Order of Good Cheer. This not-for-profit group is made up of 11 individuals and their partners.

None of this would be possible without the generous donation of 20 acres of property by Mr. Barry More and his family. This large acreage has allowed for the construction of what is growing to be a world-class facility.

Keep this living history alive and available for all of our future generations to enjoy.

Your generous donations make our projects possible. We will be delighted to send you information on how to make a financial or in kind contribution!
