Bonita Johnson-deMatteis shares her labour of love to research, verify and update available information, photos and testimonies from friends and family who were, or knew, members of the Black military of Grey, Bruce and Simcoe counties who took part in combat campaigns of the 20th century.

Bonita is a researcher, author and artist. Her design for the Black History Cairn at Owen Sound’s Harrison Park celebrates the long-standing tradition of the Owen Sound Emancipation Picnic and Black History of the area. Bonita also compiled a book about Grey County Black soldiers to compliment Grey Roots’ From Slavery to Freedom exhibit. This book won the Ontario Museum Association Award of Merit for 2003, and her work to expand this research is ongoing.

This presentation is part of our 2023 Fall Lecture Series taking place on Tuesday afternoons in November.
