Grey Roots

J. C. [Julian Charles] Forster (1860-1934) was an architect whose body of work included several projects in Owen Sound, Grey County, and beyond – spanning commercial, institutional, and residential design. Additional information about J. C. Forster’s career is available at: Forster, Julian Charles | Biographical Dictionary of Architects in Canada (External link).

The Archives at Grey Roots holds a Letter Book which includes business correspondence signed by J. C. Forster, and/or on behalf of Forster & Clark, dating from circa 1888 to 1914. The leather and cloth-bound book measures approximately 29 cm H x 24 cm W, and contains an incomplete index at the front, and 711 pages. The flyleaf is inscribed: “J. C. Forster / Architect / Owen Sound 1888”, and bears an ink stamp for “H. D. Arnold, Bookseller, Stationer & Fancy Goods Dealer, Owen Sound.”

An index was created with the goal of helping researchers to access the content of the volume, while reducing unnecessary handling. The index is intended as a research aid and is not comprehensive.
