Support Persons

Visitors accompanied by a support person are welcome at Grey Roots, and admission for support persons is free.

Service Animals

Service animals are welcome in any public-facing area of the Museum, Archives, and Moreston Heritage Village.

The main museum building, including the Archives, is fully accessible to those using scooters, wheelchairs, or assistive walking devices. Moreston Heritage Village is partially accessible.

  1. Four wheelchair accessible parking spaces are located approximately 50 metres from the main museum entrance.
     
  2. Automated door entry systems are present at both the main museum entrance and the entrance to Moreston Heritage Village.
     
  3. Exhibit areas allow for free movement of wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility devices.
     
  4. Three electric mobility scooters and one manual wheelchair are available for visitors at no charge.
     
  5. Accessible washrooms are available in the main museum building as well as the 1920s Schoolhouse in Moreston Heritage Village.
     
  6. The Thomas Wheildon Theatre features designated accessible seating areas to accommodate mobility devices.
     
  7. Exterior lighting is present at all entrances and exits of the main museum building.
     

The following buildings in Moreston Heritage Village are accessible either by ramp or ground level access:

Historical Interpreters can engage visitors outside buildings when entry is not possible. Artefact information binders and portable artefacts are available.

  1. Magnifying glasses are available use by visitors.
     
  2. When leading a tour, opportunities will be offered to handle objects where safety and the condition of the artefacts allow.

  3. Strips of paint in high contrast colours have been added to the edges of stairs or platforms in the Log House and School House.

  4. The Grey County Gallery includes several auditory experiences featuring interpretation of artefacts and oral histories. There are five rotary phone listening stations and three cascading sound speakers with seating areas.

  5. Written information is presented in large font sizes.

  6. We offer an audio tour of Moreston Heritage Village featuring historical insights, stories, and details linked to buildings and locations throughout the site.
  1. Staff are trained to assist by speaking clearly and facing the visitor to assist those who may be lip-reading.

  2. Information on the museum’s exhibits is provided in print form.
     
  3. Assistive listening devices are available for use in the Thomas Wheildon Theatre.
  1. Exhibit content uses plain language and includes images and objects to support different learning styles.

  2. Staff are trained to be patient and to speak clearly and directly.

  3. Hands-on experiences are offered to engage a variety of senses and learning styles.
  1. We are pleased to welcome ESL (English as a second language) group tours. For those supported by an interpreter, the teacher or interpreter are offered complimentary admission.

  2. Guided French language tours are available by appointment.

Age-Friendly Access

  1. Ramp and ground level entries are available at most buildings on site to support ease of access.

  2. Rest areas are provided throughout the main building and heritage village at Grey Roots.

  3. Three electric mobility scooters are available for visitors at no charge.

  4. Written information is presented in accessible font sizes.
     

Access for Young Visitors

  1. Our education programs are developed on the principal of experiential learning. Hands-on activities are integrated into all programs.

  2. Programming is designed to be adaptive to each audience at a variety of ages and abilities.
     
  3. Grey Roots travelling exhibits provide interactive experiences.

  4. Zooz’s Place, Grey Roots’ children’s gallery, provides an activity center for families to explore with young children. A comfortable area is provided for nursing or bottle-feeding.

Training

All Grey Roots Staff and volunteers are required to take the County’s Accessible Customer Service Training. The training includes an introduction to staff responsibilities under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, The Ontarians with Disabilities Act and the Human Rights Code. It reviews Grey County policies and procedures associated with the corporate Accessibility Policy. Staff and volunteers are informed of types of disabilities and barriers, guiding principles for accessible customer services, and specific best practices for accommodation of various abilities.

Communication

When communicating with a person with a disability, staff are instructed to; be flexible in the provision of services in order to meet the needs of the individual; identify, remove and prevent barriers; be respectful by serving the person first while considering their disability.

Assistive Devices

Our staff are trained to support many types of assistive devices, and visitors are encouraged to use any device that helps them access Grey Roots. Staff will always ask before touching or moving an assistive device
